Sailor-Made Inlaid Mahogany Sewing Box
Constructed of mahogany with various inlaid wood decoration and a whale ivory peg, this box was made between 1830-56 by Frederick A. Wing of Westport, MA, for his wife, Eliza H. Wing (initials on the front are E.H.W.). Wing was a whaling officer-master from the 1830s-1850s on vessels including the brig “Mexico,” ship “Cadmus,” and barks “United States,” “Mattapoisett,” and “Greyhound.” Truly a handsome piece with a wonderful, documented history. Measures 9” X 14” X 5.5”.
